Ideal Age Range:

5+ – you can adapt this project to let younger kids work on the crayon rubbing part

Mess Factor:

Low

Prep Time:

5 – 10 minutes. Cut your cardboard or cardstock into approximately 6″ x 6″ pieces. Unless you are working with older children, prepare the steps below with the hot glue designs before you start this project with yours kids.

This is a great project because this technique can be repeated to create designs for any holiday or can be personalized with your child’s name.

Active Instructions:

  1. Have the hot glue designs prepared and cooled before you begin, unless your child is old enough to use a hot glue gun on their own. Use the hot glue gun to draw the design on the card board/card stock. Pull or cut off any stringy glue before beginning the next step.
    • The designs below are ideas for Valentine’s Day – but feel free to personalize this!
  1. Choose the color paper and crayon to begin the rubbing step.
  2. Lay the paper on top of the hot glue design and help your child hold it FIRMLY in place. Color over the design using large strokes, working from one side to the other, until the rubbing is complete. This is different from leaf rubbings, because the hot glue has so much more  texture than a flat leaf.
    • Some children may need hand over hand assistance. Then allow your child to try some on their own. Uneven strokes and the added texture of the lines in the cardboard will add to the charm and design of the rubbing.
  1. Trim the finished rubbings to make Valentine cards in different sizes and colors. Add your own extra  materials to help enhance the cards. (See sample photos for suggestions)
